In October 2011, the UK will host WorldSkills London 2011; the largest vocational skills competition in the world. 1,200 competitors from 60 nations will compete in 40 vocational skills in a battle to win gold, silver and bronze medals. We are passionate about creating links and opportunities given that London will host the event and showcase the very best of vocational skills.
Held every two years in one of the member countries, the WorldSkills competition;
At WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Team UK achieved three Golds, six Bronze and 14 Medallions of Excellence, smashing their previous record of achievements from 2007. At WorldSkills London 2011 we are setting our sights even higher for Team UK, who will be looking to secure even more Gold Medals on home turf.
WorldSkills London 2011 will be the 41st WorldSkills Competition and will be hosted at the ExCel Centre in London's Docklands. The preparations leading up to the event, as well as the event itself, will create a lasting legacy, showcasing the excellence of skills training for employers, training providers and young people. Visitors to the Event will be encouraged to 'have a go' and try the trades of their choice with lots of people on hand for advice on future career options and opportunities.
Through recent investment and developments the South East is now in a stronger position to support competitors but more is still needed if our talented young people are to have the chance to compete. We are delighted that Stella Mbubaegbu CBE is the WorldSkills UK Regional Champion, in additon to her role as Principal & Chief Executive at Highbury College, Portsmouth. You can get involved by:
