Step Into Sport

Step into Sport focuses on young people aged 14 to 19 years and has been set up to provide a pathway of leadership and volunteering. It aims to train, support and deploy young people and adults into appropriate, safe and rewarding sports leadership and volunteering activity.

The overall objective of SIS is to increase the percentage of young people aged 14-19 from school sport partnerships actively involved in sports leadership and volunteering from 9% in 2004 to 14% in 2006 and 18% in 2008, with a floor target of 10% per partnership by 2008.

Step into Sport is one of the eight strands of the joint DCMS /DFES National School Sport Strategy. It is managed by Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust with Sports Leaders UK providing a high quality sports leadership tutor training service.

YST work with the School Sport Partnerships to embed the programme into the curriculum and to ensure that there is a supply of young volunteers ready to take up mentored volunteer opportunities.
Sport England provides funding and support to 49 County Sports Partnerships to develop and broker high quality volunteer opportunities for the SIS volunteers. 19 NGBs are also supported through the programme to implement volunteer strategies to support volunteers, and specifically young volunteers within their specific sport.
